If you were to poll one hundred people to describe ‘1999 (Cherry)’ in one word I would say ‘loud’ would be the chosen tag from the vast majority. I mean that much is established about a millisecond in as Oakland’s Figure Eight go at it hammer and tongs. And then they don’t and show us a side of themselves that has slacker 90’s as the main pillar but then some strains of shoegaze in the feedback ridden instrumental breaks. Adding in a lost vocal from Abby Goeser amid all the carnage is inspired and the effect is one of a behemoth showing its tender side. KH
