SPV/STEAMHAMMER ALBUM REVIEW: The Dead Daisies- Light 'em Up

There are natural pairings in life, like sunset and the rise of waves on a beach. John Corabi is like the sunrise to The Dead Daisies' crashing waves. Corabi is back at the mic stand to lead The Dead Daisies on a lively rock and roll journey, aboard the rock and roll express. Their upcoming album 'Light 'Em Up' will be released via SPV this Friday, September 6th. Since they formed a decade ago, The Dead Daisies have released over six albums, featured a who's who from the rock world, and toured with some of the best in the rock world, including Guns' N' Roses, Def Leppard and Bad Company.
Corabi returned to the fold for last year's 2023 tour with Whitesnake bassist Michael Devin. The duo forming another revised lineup to join Marti Frederiksen at Muscle Shoals studio to record and write 'Light 'Em Up'.Upon first listening, Corabi's return brings a welcomed energy that was lacking with Glenn Hughes. The album feels like a return to form with its foot-stomping tunes and raucous rock 'n' roll. It is a varied album full of tantalizing solos, delicious riffs, and added bluesy material. It feels like a combination of Guns N' Roses, AC/DC and Motley Crue.

The self-titled track "Light Em Up" is the perfect song to start the album. Corabi's notably rousing vocals soar over groove-orientated riffs and rhythmic blues. As mentioned previously, the album appears to be heavily influenced by 80s glam metal bands and 70s hard rock acts. "Times Are Changing" is reminiscent of early Aerosmith, with its infectious chorus and upbeat melodies. I think Corabi and Co have approached this album intending to simply enjoy themselves, and I believe this comes through on all ten tracks of 'Light 'Em Up'. The album is no-frills and gets back to basics with some captivating rockers.
"I Wanna Be Your Bitch" is an example of a sleaze rock anthem from the eighties, filled with salacious lyrics and crunchy riffs. I wouldn't be a great music journalist if I didn't mention the accomplished musicianship. The dual guitarists Doug Aldrich and David Lowy have experienced a resurgence, bringing a new flavour to their rock licks. The bass and drums also shine, contributing to a cohesive group effort. There are standout tracks like "I Wanna Ride," the grungy "Back to Zero," the anthemic "Way Back Home," and the hell-raising rocker "My Way or the Highway" which showcase some of the album's best material. The Dead Daisies' album "Light 'Em Up" concludes with the soulful ballad "Love That'll Never Be" and the bluesy rocker "Take My Soul". Overall, the band is back with a renewed hunger and passion for rock 'n' roll.
