Lately it’s felt like I’ve been on a 90’s kick with my concert attendance. Enjoying the likes of grunge icons like King Buzzo and Trevor Dunn from the Melvins to Stone Temple Pilots, it’s been an exciting summer. So I figured why not keep things going by stopping down the Avondale Brewing Company to catch CAKE perform! The venue was transformed into a pulsating hub of alternative rock energy as CAKE took the stage for a highly anticipated performance (as noted by it being a SOLD OUT event). Known for their distinctive blend of rock, funk, and pop, the band delivered a captivating two set show that celebrated the band’s musical catalog.

From the moment CAKE opened with “Frank Sinatra” the audience was instantly drawn in by their signature sound. Lead singer John McCrea’s distinctive voice and deadpan delivery set the tone for the evening. The band’s unique instrumentation, featuring trumpet solos and a steady, funky rhythm section, created a rich tapestry of sound that echoed through the venue. The palpable excitement in the air was complemented by the band’s relaxed demeanor, which made for an engaging performance. With McCrea enticing the audience with a singalong of “Sheep Go To Heaven” and encouraging the crowd to sing over him (mission: accomplished).

As the first set progressed, the band seamlessly transitioned into fan favorites like “Opera Singer” and “Stickshifts and Safetybelts.” Each song was met with enthusiastic cheers, and the crowd sang along with infectious energy. The band’s ability to blend catchy hooks with clever lyrics kept the audience fully engaged. McCrea’s charismatic stage presence and witty banter added an extra layer of enjoyment, making it clear that CAKE not only values their music but also the connection with their fans.

One thing that makes their shows stick out is their passion for the world around them. Midway through the performance, CAKE took a minute to talk a little about the environment and shed light on deforestation in the world through the method of gift giving. Each ticket sold Sunday night was entered into a drawing to win a pear tree during the lengthy intermission between the two sets. Effort in part of the CAKE Forest movement, a lucky audience member named Abby went home with a new addition to her home and won the tree! The drawing added a warm and fuzzy feel to the spectacle.

Moving into the second set, the band’s tight musicianship was on full display. Guitarist Xan McCurdy and bassist Daniel McCallum laid down a solid foundation, while trumpeter Vince DiFiore’s lively solos brought an exhilarating energy to each song. Drummer Todd Roper kept the rhythm steady, ensuring that every beat punctuated the crowd’s excitement. It was clear that the chemistry between the band members was as strong as ever, resulting in a polished yet dynamic performance.

Visually, the show was simple yet effective, with subtle lighting changes that enhanced the mood without overshadowing the music. The small, but open, area of the Avondale Brewing Company provided a fitting environment for CAKE’s eclectic style, effectively creating an intimate atmosphere that felt both nostalgic and fresh. As the night progressed, the crowd’s energy surged, culminating in a sing-along during “Daria,” a playful twist that perfectly encapsulated CAKE’s charm.

As the set came to a close, the band played an encore that left the audience clamoring for more. “The Distance” was an epic highlight, with McCrea’s vocals soaring over the crowd’s harmonized chorus. The band’s performance was a testament to their enduring appeal, bridging generational gaps and uniting fans with their infectious sound.

Overall, CAKE’s live performance was a remarkable experience that highlighted their musical capabilities. The band’s ability to connect with the audience, combined with their impressive musicianship, created a night to remember. As fans filed out of the venue, it was clear that CAKE continues to be a powerful force in music, captivating audiences with their unique style and infectious energy. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to their music, catching CAKE live is an experience that should not be missed.
