Florence + The Machine – How Big, How Beautiful

Xfinity Center, Mansfield, MA                                     Tuesday, June 7th 2016

How big, how beautiful can easily be used to describe Florence Welch’s stage presence and vocals. She kicked off her set at the Xfinity Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA Tuesday night with ‘What the Water Gave Me’. A mixed group of teens, tattooed millenials, husbands and wives erupted in cheers as Florence bounced off stage and up into the crowd in her bare feet and flowy, sheer yellow dress. She was lit up in the middle of the crowd, like a firefly in a field on a warm summers night. The stage was set with a simple glitter wall and subtle lighting. But with Florence on stage, theatrics are not needed.

‘Ship to Wreck’ was the second song of the night, what many thought would have been an encore given it’s popularity. It was shortly followed by a Calvin Harris cover, ‘Sweet Nothing’.

Then, in her sweet, gentle British accent, she kindly asked the crowd to put away their phones for a song she wrote when she was falling in love. “I want you to look with your eyes, and feel with your heart and not be buried in your phone…and don’t be that one guy with the phone out. I can always see you and it bums me out”. The crowd obliged and then began ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’.

Completing their set with the hit ‘Dogs Days Are Over’, Florence asked everyone to hug each other, which they happily did. Then she asked everyone to take off a piece of clothing and swing it around. Her fans looked around at each other, and in a moments time there were shirts flying through the air. She dashed around on stage, swinging around the clothing the crowd had thrown towards her. Her energy, intense and electrifying, radiated through the crowd.

She thanked everyone and exited the stage. The rumbles began and her fans anxiously awaited the encore. And an encore Florence + the Machine gave. They capped off the night with an intense performance of ‘What Kind of Man’ and ‘The Drumming Song’, leaving her fans completely satisfied.
