Aníbal – ‘Bungalow Sessions’ EP

An affecting EP from Aníbal, Bungalow Sessions presents a captivating blend of layered folk and shimmering rock, weaving heartfelt emotion with dynamic structural builds. With dreamy acoustics, reflective vocals, and moments of nocturnal synth beauty, the EP captures the emotional pull of infatuation and introspection. The El Paso-based singer/songwriter will be releasing the EP on November 26th.

“Creative Act” opens the EP with a dreamy folk entrancement, lyrically capturing a changing of emotions within a relationship. “I fell in love with your science fiction, that I created in my head,” Aníbal sings, compelling amidst twangy guitars, steady acoustic strums, and heartfelt string infusions. The reflective vocal tone and instrumentation set an emotive mood fondly reminiscent of Alex G, particularly in the hypnotic closing “I don’t know why,” refrain. “The Chase” follows, swelling from mellow keys into brisker acoustics — and continuing themes of infatuation, admitting “I’m still obsessed,” in a conquest to “make you mine.” The EP opens with a strong one-two punch, conveying sincere emotion and textured folk/rock intertwining.

The EP continues to impress with its strong songwriting thereafter, from the soaring vocal emotion within “Messenger Bags” to the serene synth-forward beauty of EP finale “Under the Covers.” The latter reminds of Mac Demarco in the lovely evolution from quaint folk to nocturnal synth-led emotion. “Too Close to the Sun” is another highlight, unfolding initially like a ballad lamenting personal constraints — and evolving grippingly into a shimmering rock arsenal with its “I’m coming home again,” declaration. Bungalow Sessions is a consistently enveloping EP from Aníbal, full of sincere emotion and rewarding structural builds.
