It’s time to check in on the results of the 2024 Kpopalypse end of year survey!
Turnout for the 2024 end of year survey at Kpopalypse.com was slightly higher than 2023, with over two hundred caonimas throwing down with their important opinions and guesses! Let’s take a look at the results!
This was readers’ favourite picks of the year. Green highlights show a pick that was also on the Kpopalypse 30 favourites of 2024 list, pink is for my #1 pick and blue is for songs that got on the honourable mentions list. Gold is for dishonourable mentions or songs in the “good in places but basically broken” category of the honourable/dishonouable mentions survey. Aespa was the big winner this year with “Supernova” being hugely popular! Note the list here doesn’t go to 30 and most lists this year do not, because not enough of you did the survey this year to make voting results meaningful past a certain point.
In addition to the colours above, the darker orange colour indicates a song on the Kpopalypse worst 30 songs of 2024 list, red is my pick for worst song of the year, and yellow represents any song that won a “special Kpopalypse award” in the honourable/dishonourable mentions post. Reader voting in this category was less concentrated and much more spread out than the favourite picks, which is why we have the full 30 picks for this worst list. Babymonster won the big booby prize with “Sheesh”, and their B-side “Woke Up In Tokyo” was so loathed that a large amount of people voted for it despite it not even being eligible for the Kpopalypse list at all, this is by far the most anyone has ever voted for a non feature-track or ineligible song! Note that quite a few people who voted for “APT” in this list (the only song here that was also on the Kpopalypse favourites list) admitted that they didn’t hate the song that much but were just sick of the song being overplayed on social media and in every shopping mall that they went to this year.
Very condensed voting here – almost a third of all people who did the survey guessed Kpopalypse’s #1 pick correctly, which isn’t that surprising given how much of a meme Chuu is here at Kpopalypse.com, however I wasn’t going to make my #1 pick harder to guess just to be a cunt.
Meovv’s laughably inept debut “Meow” was certainly awful, but it also wasn’t the worst song on the Kpopalypse list. However Naevis did managed to rack up quite a few corect guesses anyway. A lot of you clearly didn’t pay attention in roundups when I said that I actually liked “APT”, a song which left such an impression on all of you (good or bad) that it placed in every single category of the survey. Note that many readers invalidated their vote in this category with responses like “something from [some group]” which I can’t really work with in the results, I need specific shitty songs, as painful as it might be for you to check!
The “please don’t hurt my bias” award for 2024 goes to Fromis_9, but their song wasn’t anywhere near bad enough for me to feel like I needed to rub salt into the wound, I had much bigger fish to fry. It’s bad enough for the poor girls having to deal with Pledis, let’s not add another negative Kpopalypse review into the mix. In fact the only song on here that really got any significant criticism from Kpopalypse at all on the end of year lists was Lisa’s “New Woman“, and honesty even that song is decent if you take away the shitty Rosalia breakdown.
The “oh no, not THAT fucking song Kpopalypse you cunt” award went to Rose and Bruno Mars this year, probably just due to their song being literally everywhere and impossible to escape from. Many people though that I’d troll them with Fifty Fifty’s “Starry Night” as a way to make fun of the laughably ineffective Fifty Fifty boycott, but I would never, how dare you even suggest that I would even think of doing such a thing, I’m appalled, tsk tsk…
You can see all of the clearing house suggestions (or at least most of those that were valid) over at the reader-suggested songs post, although it was honestly surprising how many people suggested songs that weren’t even “missed earlier in the year” but were just new songs that popped out after roundups closed off for the year, you can see those December songs here. As usual quite a few people voted for songs that were never eligible for inclusion, or that were actually released in 2023 instead of 2024, oh well.
Some selected responses, and my replies!
Good job keeping me entertained with your content. You’ve been doing this long enough and you’re very good at it.
Thank you! I try not to suck!
Happy happy christmas, long term caonima here, really enjoying the content as always. I still read the round up every week even if you shit all over songs I enjoy, must be some masochistic tendency LOL Well it’s fun to see different opinions anyway. I think you mentioned doing more interviews next year? Can’t wait!
Well I’d like to do more, but it’s really not up to me. My inbox is always open, but people who are (or more likely, were) part of the k-pop scene need to step up! Crossing my fingers for someone to be bold enough to talk to me in more than an off-the-record capacity…
IVE told the Lollapalooza crowd to be sure to stay hydrated. I saw Kiss of Life in Anaheim yesterday, and they told us all to stay hydrated, too. Maybe they could also start telling the US audiences to lay off the carbs and get some exercise, while they’re at it?
I hope everyone who is reading this post stays hydrated.
surely ALL of kpopalypse’s lesbian readers can’t be taken…
I suspect not. If anyone wants to start a Kpopalypse lesbian readers meetup group somewhere, go right ahead…
Boy band Drama review when??? Like, boobs are great and all, but sometimes I need a break and enjoy some hunks instead. No twink btw.
It’s not intentional gender bias, just lack of material. Some male JAV stars need to do a Honey Popcorn and make a k-pop group. Alternatively, some Korean boy band members need to make their JAV debut, or at least be seen within light years of the JAV industry. If they do, I’ll be there with reviews to cover these important developments!
You often include mentions that no one reads anything on your site other than round-ups and round-ups (.)(.) but I want to let you know that I enjoy every single one of your posts. Thanks especially for all the awesome non-Korean Asian rock recs this year, I’m going to miss them. You followed me back on BlueSky and I am perplexed but content because you show up in the mutuals feed. I will continue my quest to make your books available from my local library. Happy Christmas and Happy New Year!
Thank you for your support! Note to everyone that while I appreciate all people who buy my books, if you’re broke as a mofo you can borrow them for free from any library that has the Libby/Kobo Overdrive system!
Hi! Hope you’re good
I’m torn between hoping you to sell many books and not selling much because of remembering the Triple S member thing. Also, do you have any recommendations for ukulele (it’s for an university subject)?
And thank you for the asian-but-not-kpop recs on the roundup! Do you have any idea what you’ll do for roundup next year? maybe something like a rec from a music genre (or several) you usually dislike that are not kpop?
I did sell a few more just recently so I think that TripleS post may be coming sometime in 2025…
The theme of 2025 roundups is LGBT, more information will be in the first roundup, on 6th January 2025!
Thank you so much for everything you do oppar! I’ve been a faithful caonima since 2012 (yes) and read all the Shin Hana books. I also recommend your blog to everyone I know who is into kpop or simply pop music, the end of the year lists are always so much fun to read. Speaking of reading, can’t wait for your next book releases. The Shin Hana series was fire and I need more idols taking revenge stories. I want to join a grindcore band and go to a Nari gym if I can find one nearby.
Also, I hope next year is less hectic for you and your finances recover, it’s been hard for all of us at the other side of the ocean. I’ll see you in the end of the year streams hopefully! Cheers to you, your girlfriend and your cats!
Thank you! There will be a new different book in 2025. I deliberately didn’t write it straight away because I wanted to take a break from writing (and also give people’s wallets a break) but work is now underway!
Keep ur hands *above* the table for gfriend comeback buddy!
I guarantee nothing.
With all the “media literacy” shit I’ve been seeing recently I’ve been thinking about how important your blog was, years ago, towards forming my understanding of the intentions of the people who make the stuff I enjoy. The “healthy porn for men” article especially– it was important for me to read as a naive teenager who had no understanding of that kind of thing previously. Also if you don’t put Virtual Angel and/or Birth in at least the honorable mentions I’m going to start questioning if you’re going senile you old fucker.
Thanks for reading! Now where did I put my glasses…
Merry Christmas kpopalypse oppar!! i’ll never forget when you liked my comment after i defended you in a lissa caonima comment section, it meant a lot. i can’t wait for the year end list and the lgbtq song features next year. Keep up the good work at making media illiterate tiktok users angry and have a great holiday!!
Thank you for your support!
Merry Christmas from Lissa Caonima. I don’t have much of an idea as to where I’m going to send you retro song review contenders when retrospring shuts down but i am looking forward to the lgbt song features in next year’s roundups. And of course to all the tiktok comments good and meltdowny to come.
Hi Lissa, Retrospring has now been replaced by Neospring, so feel free to use! Thank you for your service in braving the wild lands of TikTok!
don’t celebrate either but thank you for the well wishes regardless. mondays a bleak affair when you’re a girl working a corporate job. your weekly roundups make me laugh and get me through it so thank you for all of your efforts and hard work.
staying persistent in doing something for years is hard. mad respect for you for still keeping this blog alive, after all this time. jave a great christmas and may the upcoming year be kinder to you than the previous one!
Thanks for continuing to read, I couldn’t do it without the readers! Well, actually I could, but it wouldn’t be anywhere near as fulfilling! You guys give me the strength to keep going!
Merry Christmas to you and your cat! I feel like I’ve been reading this dumb blog for eons but it really, really helps sift out what’s worth listening to in Kpop versus the utter shite. I’ve been following oppar’s example and writing my own book (no lesbians in it, please forgive). This endeavor means I know have to figure out how drums work (there are drums in the book), so I guess I’ll be combing your blog for any relevant music theory/errant drum advice. I can’t believe that half of what I know about how music works comes from a grumpy Australian cunt’s objectification catalogue and general guide to boobs. Keep up the good work, it’s much appreciated.
No lesbians in your book, tsk tsk please reflect. If you have specific drum questions feel free to hit me up.
Merry Chri & Happy New Year!!! Actually a really good year for Kpop. I really struggled to choose a favourite song, let alone rank 30 like you do. Do you have a WIP list all year round or do you have to scramble to pull it out of your arsehole come December? Stay based ya cunt, you’re a good one
