Phoebe Green Shares New Single, ‘What Are You Doing’

Being able to view heartbreak through alt-pop-coloured lenses has been made much easier following today’s release of Phoebe Green’s newest single, ‘What Are You Doing’. The second single from Green’s upcoming EP ‘The Container’, ‘What Are You Doing’ transports the listener to sonic, synth-laden soundscapes, with the theme of vulnerability at their epicentre.

Through vocals which surge from the distant and dystopian, to warm and rich, and then promptly back again, Green’s single aptly personifies the calamity of a toxic relationship. This is only emboldened by the cyclical structure of the song, in turn serving to compound such relationship’s reoccurring and often inescapably vicious nature. Yet the flurry of illuminating synths, which work so diligently alongside Green’s vocals, provide an element of optimism. An optimism which isn’t quite yet tangible, but enough to embolden not only Green but the listener also.

When discussing the nature and origins of her upcoming EP, Green stated that:

‘The Container’ feels so right for me at this point in time, I just think that these songs represent where I’m at in terms of taste, ability and emotional state. It’s been so freeing to be able to go back to recording in my bedroom and writing out of a sheer need to express myself, to document my growth and allow others into that.

It is clear to see that ‘The Container’, set for release on the 21st of March, shall act as a cathartic release for Green. A cathartic release from calamity and chaos, but a release which feeds into an ever-flowering creativity. ‘What Are You Doing’ is a remedial antidote for modern heartbreak, that only rightly deserves to be belted out to your heart’s content.
