Lurcher – “Stone Island”

The debut release from Lurcher, “Stone Island” channels an infectious punk-rock sound with ample attitude and charisma. A spoken-word briskness moves amidst distorted guitars to start. “Can you feel my hatred for these cunts?” they declare, wearing angst on a prominent sleeve as jumpy guitar distortion and bouncy bass intertwine. A hazier, slowed-down guitar drive envelops thereafter; “Stone Island” consistently enamors in its balancing of peppy punk stream-of-conscious intrigue and a more introspective central hook.

A trickling guitar line past the one-minute turn swells into a raucous vocal snarling, reminding fondly of The Libertines there. “Let ’em breathe,” the vocals implore, referring to dreams. “Stone Island” is a stirring overall success from the Hartlepool, UK-based Lurcher, who achieve a sound here that sounds like a lovable blend of Art Brut and The Libertines — amidst poignant scathing commentaries on an era of consumerism and superficiality.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
