An amiably melodic rock appeal shines throughout “Costa Rica,” a new single from Minneapolis-based artist Mary Strand that features Soul Asylum guitarist Ryan Smith. The track comes via Strand’s upcoming album I Don’t Need Your Permission, due to release this summer. “Costa Rica” is its first single, taking inspiration from a family trip to the titular country. References to “dirt roads, flat tires, getting lost for hours,” showcase the hecticness of the trip — while also embracing how tumult can turn into memorable life experiences.
An opening soaring guitar line conjures a sense of ’90s nostalgia (shades of Weezer’s “Buddy Holly”), as Strand’s melodic vocals set the scene for “that’s where everything went down.” Vibrant guitars and playful percussion complement the “what a disaster,” acknowledgement — while reminding “I’m not mad,” in embracing the best of a situation. Cold bathroom showers and less-than-ideal arrangements turn into a drive to visit the beautiful ocean; the rousing track reminds to look on the bright side of things, and embrace the twists and turns life has in store for us.
Strand’s band, Mary Strand & The Garage, features on the track — which, in addition to Smith, includes Jack Strand (Outta Coentro) on drums and Mark Wade (The Melismatics, The Mood Swings) on bass and backing vocals.
