Since emerging from London’s alternative scene in early 2020, Menaura has developed a sound that feels both expansive and intricate. Blending shoegaze with math rock elements, they create layered compositions that shift between atmospheric textures and complex rhythms, allowing them to carve out a distinct identity within the genre.
Menaura’s lyrics delve into themes of escapism, the search for meaning, and the overwhelming maze of modern misinformation, reflecting a depth that extends beyond their intricate instrumentation. Their sound draws inspiration from bands known for their eclecticism, such as Radiohead and Deafheaven, blending atmospheric shoegaze with dynamic shifts in intensity. Beyond their studio work, Menaura has brought their music to important venues, including The Dublin Castle, O2 Academy Islington, and The Windmill Brixton.
Menaura’s latest single, DRM (Dodgy Response Mechanism), is inspired by a concept coined by the band’s lyricist and guitarist, Douglas Runebjörk. The term captures the universal sense of detachment from reality that can arise through grief, anxiety, or a loss of purpose. Through this track, the band explores these emotional struggles, translating them into an auditive treat that mirrors the disorientation and introspection tied to these feelings.
DRM begins with delicate guitar segments that set an emotive tone, creating an engaging dynamic between the vocal performances of Diana Opiela (vocals, keyboard) and Douglas Runebjörk (guitar, vocals). Initially, the track flows like a soothing shoegaze composition, enveloping the listener in its rich atmosphere. However, halfway through, the song takes a striking turn, replacing the melodic guitar lines with vibrant, distorted riffs, introducing a math rock influence that intensifies the piece. Diana’s passionate, vocal delivery adds another layer of emotion before the song returns to its ballad-like harmonies, ultimately culminating in a brilliantly chaotic performance.
