An Imagine Dragons song has successfully been landed on the moon.
Last month, it was announced that space tech company Lonestar was due to launch a rocket from Kennedy Space Center to land a data center on the Moon. If the mission was successful, a song would be transmitted to the data center – this was selected as Imagine Dragons and composter Inon Zur’s collaboration ‘Children Of The Sky’ for the Starfield soundtrack.
The mission launched launched on February 26 and landed on the moon’s surface on March 6. Inon Zur took to social media to share that after the spacecraft’s landing, the data center on the moon had successfully received transmissions for the song and its lyrics. “The song will now be on the Moon… forever!!,” he wrote.
Success, we’re on the Moon! Following Athena’s touchdown on the lunar surface, our friends at Lonestar successfully transmitted ‘Children of the Sky’ song and lyrics to their data center on the Moon. The song will now be on the Moon…forever!! pic.twitter.com/8lxbajRR9N

However, the mission wasn’t entirely successful. During the landing process, the spacecraft’s contact with the home base was temporarily lost. Once contact was re-established, it was determined that the spacecraft had not landed in the intended spot, and that one of the two radio antennas was not operating. Additionally, the spacecraft was not generating sufficient power to complete the mission.
By March 7, the craft’s power was completely depleted, bringing the mission to a close. As a result, Imagine Dragons’ ‘Children Of The Sky’ was not broadcast back to Earth as initially hoped. If it were successful, it would’ve made ‘Children Of The Sky’ the first-ever song to be broadcast from the moon.
As for the song successfully being transmitted to the moon’s data center, it is now one of several songs that have landed successfully on the moon. In 2024, it was announced that a lunar lander containing digitised recordings of songs from Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Timbaland and more touched down on the moon last February.
Last year, Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Renolds admitted that he’d been late for Imagine Dragons’ own gigs because he was busy playing video games. “Look, I’m really tall, 6 foot 4, never played sports, always did music and drama, so people probably think I’m not a gamer, but it’s my bread and butter. It’s our world,” he added, with the band also collaborating with League Of Legends, Nintendo and Netflix’s Arcane tv show.
Imagine Dragons are set to tour the UK later this year as part of a European stadium run that begins in May and will include two shows at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Tickets are available here. Imagine Dragons: Live From The Hollywood Bowl will be screening worldwide on March 26 and 29. Tickets are on sale now.
