The Miki Berenyi Trio Face Grief in the Mirror in Their Dreamy Video for “Kinch”

Loss, in its painful purity, opens our eyes to the true nature of love. For in the absence of what we held dear, we are faced with the vastness of what remains—love itself, untethered and uncontained. We realize that love is not possession, not something to hold tightly, but a force that flows, endlessly. It is only when we lose, when the illusion of permanence fades, that we can grasp that love is not about clinging, but about surrender. Through loss, we come to understand that love is the eternal rhythm, the pulse of life itself, ever-present even in its absence.

This Friday, the Miki Berenyi Trio releases their debut album, Tripla, via Bella Union (Order Here). Fronted by former Lush luminary Miki Berenyi, a flame-haired icon of the ’90s, the trio’s sound is firmly rooted in creative collaboration. Together with KJ ‘Moose’ McKillop and Oliver Cherer, they create songs as equals, entwined and echoed in the album’s Hungarian title: tripla, meaning simply ‘triple’. Today, the trio reveals Kinch, a tender track paired with an intimate, poignant video, announcing their North American tour this autumn.

The video, directed by Sébastien Faits-Divers, unfolds with the quiet grace of a forgotten memory. Filmed in Dijon, France, where time seems to stretch and sigh, it captures the aching ache of recollection, where Miki’s father and the late Chris Acland, Lush’s drummer, live on in the faded frames along a hallway wall. There they linger: silent, still; haunting the edges of the present. The music and video both mirror – literally – this fragile dance of loss and love, where sorrow and sweetness swirl together, reminding us that the moments we grasp so tightly are the very ones that slip away the quickest.

“The lyrics are inspired by love and loss, and how those people never leave you, and how it makes you think about the nature of love,” says Berenyi.

MB3 has returned to their roots, recording at home and hauling their gear in a car, loading in and out of venues themselves. Tripla offers a richly layered and imaginative strain of dream pop; an often euphoric, at times melancholic blend of guitars and electronica. Miki’s unmistakable, effervescent voice leads the charge, delivering a profound and sometimes abrasive or yearning perspective on the world. From lashing out at the toxic masculinity of figures like Andrew Tate to addressing the broad spectrum of human self-destruction; spanning social intolerance, sexism, and environmental decay, this new collection continues their politically-charged legacy.

“There is something very ‘grass roots’ about what we’re doing,” says Berenyi.  “There’s no point following the ‘announce the album, then tour, then record the next album’ route – we just want to wring as much enjoyment out of this as we can, and hope that it resonates somewhere!”
