trainboy – “Green Tea”

London-based artist trainboy showcases a melodic ascent on new single “Green Tea,” expanding from quaint, charming guitar-driven lo-fi ruminations into a hook-filled twinkling radiance. Led by singer-songwriter Dave Macleod, trainboy excels with a sound that cohesively balances dreamy pop intrigue and twangy rock hypnotics within “Green Tea,” which was also crafted in collaboration with French drummer Guillaume Boisselet and guitarist Sam Beasty. American artist Bex Vines also contributes backing vocals. The result is a cathartic, replay-inducing success.

The central “leave them all behind,” chorus consumes in its overall sense of personal renewal — especially when traversing into a satiating final minute, where prancing piano and whirring guitars complement a spoken-word vocal introspection. Prior, a lushly inviting guitar-driven aesthetic — with shades of early Blur — enamors in its more laid-back refrains. The track represents a thorough success from trainboy, describing the release’s inspiration as being “mMostly the consumption of excessive amounts of green tea. Plus walks alongside the canal in Camden town and watching amateur football matches on Hackney marshes on a Sunday.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
