Doechii has spoken out against the Trump immigration raids in Los Angeles at the 2025 BET Awards.
The Swamp Princess accepted the award for Best Female Hip Hop Artist at the Peacock Theatre last night (June 9) – you can see a full list of winners here.
During her speech, Doechii said that though she was “honoured” by the award, she wanted to “address what is happening right now outside of the building”.
“There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order,” she continued, citing Trump’s deployment of the National Guard against ongoing protests in LA.
“Trump is using military forces to stop a protest,” Doechii added. “I want you all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us. What type of government is that?”
Doechii also pointed to the ICE raids which have seen agents storm LA workplaces to arrest those who have allegedly violated US immigration laws. “People are being swept up and torn from their families”, she said.
“I feel like it’s my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people. For Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people of Gaza, we all deserve to live in hope and not fear. I hope we stand together.”
The Swamp Princess takes her crown again! Standing ovation please for the #BETAwards Best Female Hip Hop Artist, @officialdoechii
