London collective Y return with their explosive new single “Skipper”, out today (October 21) via SO Recordings (Enter Shikari, Deadletter, Big Special) and Hideous Mink Records (Alien Chicks, Opus Kink). The track, which premiered last night on BBC 6 Music with Steve Lamacq, is accompanied by a striking new video.
Emerging from the capital’s vibrant underground scene, Y have quickly become one of the UK’s most fearless and forward-thinking bands. Having earned their stripes at The Windmill, supported acts such as Fat Dog, KEG, and Warmduscher, and sold out their own headline show at the 100 Club, the group have spent 2024 making waves across major festivals including The Great Escape, Brighten The Corners, and Manchester Psych Fest. They’ll celebrate the release of “Skipper” with a headline show at Third Man Records, Soho, on October 30.
With growing support from So Young, DIY, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, Rough Trade, and radio backing from BBC 6 Music (Steve Lamacq, Amy Lamé, Emily Pilbeam) and Radio X (John Kennedy), Y are cementing their place at the forefront of the UK’s experimental scene.
Speaking about the new release, the band said:
“‘Skipper’ was an obvious choice for our next single, as we’ve always had a strong reaction from audiences when playing it live. With this track, we wanted to push the sound we’ve become known for — restless and relentless. Lyrically, the track addresses class divide and hierarchy, in which the rich skip through a world they feel they own. It’s written like an acid trip, full of wordplay. Sonically, ‘Skipper’ aggresses against the outdated; it takes influences from the best of the past while being firmly set in the now, with an eye on the future.”
