Veronneau crafts a moving tribute to singer-songwriter history with Blue Tapestry, reimagining the classic songs of Joni Mitchell and Carole King with melodic, folk-set interpretations. The husband-and-wife duo, comprising Lynn Veronneau and UK guitarist Ken Avis, let the songs breathe, pairing Lynn’s exquisite, emotive vocals with Avis’s playful, nuanced guitar work, highlighting both the timeless beauty of the originals and Veronneau’s own atmospheric sensibilities.
A haunting take on Joni Mitchell’s “Blue” opens the album, substituting the original’s opening piano work for ghostly acoustics as the spine-tingling title-touting vocal emerges. The more folk-ready sound pairs with chilly vocal layers for an especially impactful sound. Mitchell’s “Carey” ensues, channeling a breezier soulfulness in its expressive vocal tones and playful guitar strums. Also standing out with a delightfully frolicking version of “Case of You,” Veronneau does excellently in showcasing the exquisite range of Joni Mitchell, while also simultaneously showcasing their own project’s atmospheric strengths.
The album’s Carole King side succeeds just as well. “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman” excels with its “used to feel uninspired” vocal admissions and warming acoustics, reminding of the original track’s power in its arrival to the classic, unmistakable chorus. “So Far Away” is also played with gorgeous impact, embracing a brightly approachable sound in its gliding guitars. “It’s Too Late” concludes the album with sating qualities, ethereal and jazz-touched in its delectable arsenal. Doing the riveting songwriting of Joni Mitchell and Carole King strong justice, Blue Tapestry is an accomplished, resonating success from Veronneau.
