2025 has been an especially active year for Phwoar. Helena (drums/vocals) and Paul (guitar/vocals) released their well-received EP Flowers Through The Concrete in April, then took on their first UK headlining tour in October, playing ten cities including Liverpool, London, Newport, Bristol, Dundee, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Oxford, and wrapping it up with a hometown headline show in Birmingham.
You’d imagine they might slow down after all that, but that’s definitely not their style. Instead, Phwoar unveiled Pleasure Island, a track filled with the witty, tongue-in-cheek edge that has become part of their identity.
The track dives into modern capitalist Britain, highlighting the gap between its bright, carnival-like exterior and the worn-down reality beneath it, while still acknowledging the band’s affection for the place. There’s a sense that things aren’t completely lost, because without that glimmer of hope, it wouldn’t truly feel like a Phwoar song.
Musically, Pleasure Island keeps the duo’s familiar trademarks while giving them a fresh angle. Paul’s emphatic vocal delivery drives the theme forward, almost like a spoken message that naturally evolved into a punchy indie-rock tune, while Helena’s precise drum work cuts straight through the mix.
Looking back, the year has been anything but quiet for Phwoar. They’ve strengthened their presence across the UK’s indie scene and continued rolling out consistently strong material. If 2026 brings even half of what they offered this year, there’s a lot to anticipate from this rising duo.
