A breezy, twangy rock and pop melding enamors on “Brand New Me,” an alluring new track from Vienna-based artist fencah that excels in its perspectives of risk-taking and artistry. Specifically, the track captures a theoretical “brand new me” in the context of being tired of working at a secure, though soulless job — and deciding to finally take the plunge to follow music-related passions full time.
For Fencah — the project of Max Zauner — that meant pursuing his dreams to become a musician, producer, and mix engineer. From his studio artig Recordings, he crafts heartfelt, melodic material — which also caught our ears this past summer with the track “I need space.” He started writing songs seriously during the pandemic, and now has multiple self-produced standouts to the project’s name. The tracks precede the upcoming album Small Room, Full Heart, out next year.
Steady acoustic strums and day-dreaming vocals stir initially, lamenting how “I’m an unresponsive man” who is “looking for a getaway.” The production gradually builds with twangy briskness, into a title-bearing enthusiasm as the “I turn to be a Brand New Me” vibrancy emerges. “Who am I working for? And why is it not me?” the vocals continue with affecting finality, beckoning with a question that delights in its carpe-diem mentality and confidence in oneself. “Brand New Me” is another showcase of high-quality songwriting from fencah.
