New York, NY – January 5, 2026 – Sony Music Entertainment today announced the premiere of The Crimes of Margo Freshwater, a gripping new true crime podcast that unravels the extraordinary life of a 18-year-old woman whose relationship with a man twice her age led to a murder spree, a prison escape, and decades living under a false identity. Hosted by Cooper Moll, the series takes listeners deep into one of the most compelling fugitive cases in American history. Subscribers to The Binge can listen to all episodes today
In 1969, Margo Freshwater was sentenced to 99 years in a Tennessee prison after a Bonnie and Clyde-like crime spree that led to the murder of three people tied to the man she fell in with, Glenn Nash. Eighteen months later, she escaped and vanished from prison, reinventing herself as Tonya McCartor, a suburban mom in Ohio. For decades, she lived undetected and in plain sight, just three miles from where she grew up. That is until her past caught up to her one afternoon in 2002.
No one has really confronted me, and if they did, I would just say, well, you need to hear what the real story is before you are so quick to judgment and leave it at that.
– Tonya McCartor fka Margo Freshwater
Nearly sixty years since the original crimes, Tonya McCartor breaks her silence for the first time. Through exclusive interviews with McCartor herself, investigator Gregg Costas, defense attorneys and her family The Crimes of Margo Freshwater explores the unanswered questions: Was Margo an accomplice or a frightened teenager manipulated into survival? How was she finally caught? And how did she form a completely normal life after her escape?
“At its core, this is a story about identity, reinvention, and the gray area between guilt and innocence,” said host Cooper Moll. “Tonya McCartor is one of the most compelling people I’ve ever met, and after decades of speculation and silence, I can’t wait for people to finally hear her story in her own words.”
The Crimes of Margo Freshwater is hosted by Cooper Moll. The series is executive produced by Ben Fetterman, Andrea Gunning and Nancy Glass of Glass Podcasts. The podcast is also executive produced by Catherine Saint Louis and Jonathan Hirsch of Sony Music Entertainment.
