Girlband! is a group that really should be on your radar right now. This up-and-coming UK band is already making serious waves, with features on legendary platforms like NME, Rolling Stone, Clash, and Dork, plus airplay on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music. I first got into them when I heard their song “Not Like The Rest”, and it hit me instantly. The queer themes, the feeling of not fitting in your hometown, that line “something says I’m not like the rest” just cuts straight to the core. If you have ever felt like you do not belong anywhere, not at school, not at your job, not even at home, this song will absolutely resonate with you. The raspy vocal is packed with emotion and authenticity, cutting through the speakers in this raw, unpolished way that pulls you in deeper. Add the distorted electric guitars and that snappy snare drum, and you get a rush of punk energy that feels urgent and real. I was also genuinely so stoked to find out that Girlband! covered one of my all-time favorite glam rock bands, T. Rex, and completely nailed it. Marc Bolan would definitely be proud! Their take on “Hot Love” brings this perfect mix of classic rock n’ roll swagger and modern, blown-out, big-hair energy. The drums are loud and relentless all the way through, giving the song this driving, no-apologies momentum. Then there’s this absolutely screaming guitar solo that slices right through the track, rising above the mix in the best way possible. The vocals stay laid back and raspy, dripping with attitude, like they know exactly how cool this song already is. I have heard a lot of T. Rex covers over the years, and honestly, this one truly stands out. Do yourself a favor and listen to it now. Girlband! is on the rise!
