Daniel Radcliffe has said he thinks the new Harry Potter actor will be “better” than him in the new upcoming TV adaptation of the famous novel series.
The actor was cast as Harry Potter over 25 years ago in the film series and revealed recently that he’d wrote a letter to Dominic McLaughlin, who will star as Potter in the new, forthcoming HBO TV series about the boy wizard. The series which will adapt J.K. Rowling’s novels across eight seasons.
McLaughlin will star in the new adaptation alongside Arabella Stanton, who will portray Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout, who will take on the role of Ron Weasley.
They were the successful applicants from a pool of over 30,000 after an open casting call last year. The series is set to premiere sometime in 2027.
Now, Radcliffe has said he thinks McLaughlin will be “better” than him in the new adaptation.
In a new interview with ScreenRant about HBO’s new series, Radcliffe said: “I’m sure Dominic is going to be better than me. “I learned as I went. I look back on what I did now with a lot more kindness, and I find it less embarrassing now that I’m older. But I was very much learning how to do it for a long time on Potter,” he explained.
Radcliffe added: “When these kids got cast, there’s a whole thing around the internet, around the world, people being like, ‘We’ve got to look after these kids.’ I was like, ‘If you mean that, if everyone really means what they are saying, then one of the things you can do for me is not ask about me and Rupert [Grint about it] all the time.’
“I would like not to be weird spectral phantoms in these children’s lives, and just to let them, like, get on it. Because it’s going to be a new thing.”
Back in December, Radcliffe and Tom Felton reunited 24 years after the release of the franchise’s first movie.
The pair, who played rivals Potter and Draco Malfoy throughout the films, met up at a screening of Merrily We Roll Along’s film adaptation at the Hudson Theatre in New York last December. Radcliffe previously starred in the 2023 Broadway revival of the musical.
Radcliffe and Felton shared a big hug and exchanged a few words before later posing for a picture, their first in more than a decade.
The pair last appeared on screen together in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, in 2011. Radcliffe, 36, and Felton, 38, met while filming Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone, which was released 24 years ago last month.
Felton made his Broadway debut last year, reprising his role as Draco in Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.
The production, now in its seventh year in New York, follows the next generation of Hogwarts families, centring on Harry and Draco’s sons as they grapple with the legacy of the wizarding war.
