A stellar new EP from Chicago dream-pop act Snowcuffs, Sweet Gravity envelops across both bursting guitar charisma and lush synth beauty. Showing influences such as Alvvays, Beach House, and Mazzy Star, the project — formed in late 2022 by members of Lightfoils and Astrobrite — dazzles on this sophomore EP.
EP opener “Burst” compels in its mixture of twanging, exuberant guitars and front woman Stephanie Nikolas’ gripping vocal presence — seamlessly venturing across both serene introspection and escalating passion. “I tried to be, all that I can be,” her vocals emanate. “And my heart burst, and rushed out of me.” The brisk, harmonious rock appeal resonates alongside memorable themes. As the band explains: ““Burst” is about pushing yourself to the point of burnout and realizing something has to give. The lyrics circle themes of pressure, regret, and release, using physical images like breath, thirst, and collapse to mirror that emotional strain.”
Another standout track, “Sunless” melds bright shoegaze-y textures and a post-punk rhythmic peppiness, fondly reminding of early Interpol and Wolf Alice in its initial unveiling. “There’s only sunlight when you call, I miss the summer through the fall,” Nikolas’ vocals emerge, the ensuing “through the wall” expanse being wholly impactful. EP finale “Cold Memories” excels as well, perhaps the EP’s darkest and most atmospheric effort, in its fuzzy guitars and dexterous percussion. Even in its most nocturnal glimpses though, all four EP tracks succeed with atmospheric warmth and melodic immediacy.
