Blood Wizard have returned with their third single of the year, “I Know You Well,” a track that signals a thicker, more atmospheric shift for the project. Released today via Sad Club Records, the single serves as a final preview of the upcoming EP Lucky Life, due on April 16th. Moving away from the folkier leanings of their 2024 album Grinning William, frontman Cai Burns describes the new sound as an intentional dive into the alternative guitar records he grew up on. With “I Know You Well,” the band swaps skeletal arrangements for a “psychic connection” translated into walls of hazy, shoegaze-inflected guitars that carry more weight and space than any of their previous work.
Of the single, the band’s Cai Burns states,
I Know You Well is about the people that I know and love the most, and the side effects of having that almost psychic connection with them.
It feels different to earlier Blood Wizard songs. We wanted to make something that sounded thicker and fuller, and bring in some of that hazy, shoegaze kind of atmosphere. I grew up on alternative guitar records, and this was me really leaning into that instinct, letting the guitars carry more weight and space than usual.
The shift in sound is a direct result of a new, collaborative writing process in South London. What began as a solo venture for Burns has evolved into a group effort, with the band skipping traditional rehearsals to experiment with vocal shifting and sampling in each other’s homes. This “experimental” energy has already won over critics at DIY, So Young, and The Line of Best Fit, with the track quickly picking up rotation on BBC 6Music’s New Music Fix. Fans won’t have to wait long to hear the new material live, as the band kicks off a UK headline tour this April, including a marquee stop at London’s Moth Club and a curated set at the Young Barbican Takeover Festival.
