Berlin-based artist Lawrence Timoni crafts a late-night alternative sanctuary with new single “In Every Quiet Moment.” Soulful vocals glide over an intriguing assortment of funky bass and chilly piano, whilst the lyrics explore identity within the power of urban silence. This groove-driven production ultimately melts into an anthemic distortion, rewarding listeners with high-contrast, atmospheric tension.
A spacious atmospheric intrigue opens the track, where a hint of strings gives way to a thumping, cinematic bass presence — quickly accompanied by steady percussion as Timoni’s soulful vocals emerge. “Silence so disturbing, yet it draws us near,” he lets out, tonally showing shades of Glenn Tilbrook in its R&B and pop fusing. The addition of chilly piano lends a spine-tingling quality as Timoni’s vocals escalate, introspective in the delivery to the wholly impactful “in every quiet moment, in the spaces we can’t control / there lies the deepest echo, the true song of the soul.”
The production is vivid in its moody instrumentation, and Timoni’s vocals match that as well — conjuring a nocturnal scene-setting that’s palpable in its vividness. “I take the long way home, no music in my ears,” he recounts as the soulful bass and piano intertwining continues. “Footsteps on the pavement, filing down the years.”
The depictions of a night walk home, devoid of music to keep one’s internal thoughts at bay — and instead capturing those “quiet” moments, uncontrollable in their noise and activity, though nonetheless providing us the ability to find the trueness of our souls, without noise or distraction. The final couple minutes then proves dazzling with a striking tonal shift, the vocals assuming a brisker motion with hints of trip-hop in the rhythmic bolstering and ghostly vocal layering: “silence, so disturbing, yet it draws us near.” A rousing blast of rock-ready, anthemic distortion caps off the fantastic track, which is an utter delight from Lawrence Timoni in both melody and atmosphere.
