Aptøsrs – “Rust Mountain (Monochrome Piano Version)”

Los Angeles-based artist Aptøsrs captivated in 2024 with the debut single “Rust Mountain,” spanning from gentle orchestral haunts into an array of industrial murmuring and fervent strings. Now, the project (pronounced “apatosaurus”) of composer, songwriter, and producer Paul Terry unveils a beautifully different take on “Rust Mountain,” described as its “Monochrome Piano Version.” The conceptual idea was inspired from Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, a special black-and-white version of the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One. That artistic output prompted Terry to wonder: what would a “monochrome” version of “Rust Mountain” sound like?

The result is thoroughly enthralling. While the original stirred in its layers of percussive swells, moody bass, and cinematic strings, this new interpretation finds those elements replaced by haunting piano tones — moving with dreamy allure and navigating impactfully through moments of both ardor and lush introspection. While many piano versions of more expansive tracks maintain a more understated glow, this track maintains the original’s ferocious power — while still leading with the dynamic impact of piano. A strong atmosphere and emotion linger throughout the production, which again features the talents of mixer Adam Noble (Biffy Clyro, Paul McCartney, Don Broco), and masterer Robin Schmidt (Wolf Alice, Pixies, Royal Blood). “Rust Mountain (Monochrome Piano Version)” is another resonating, momentum-filled success from Aptøsrs.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
