Sony has confirmed the PlayStation 5 is about to get a lot more expensive around the world due to the “continued pressures” in the global economic landscape.
Last April, Sony announced that the price of the PlayStation 5 would rise across the world with UK fans having to shell out £40 more for the discless version of the console, bringing it to £429.99. “With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, [we] have made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price of the PlayStation 5 console,” the company said in a short statement.
And now, less than a year later, Sony has confirmed another price rise for the PlayStation 5.
“With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally,” wrote Sony’s Vice President of Global Marketing, Isabelle Tomatis. “We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”
Man, gaming is becoming even more unaffordable for a lot of people and it hurts to watch that happening in real time. https://t.co/60JKTpieYu

From April 2, the base PlayStation 5 will cost £569.99 (up from £479.99), the PS5 Digital Edition will set you back £519.99 (up from £429.99) and Sony will charge £789.99 for the PS5 Pro which was previously £699.99.
“Translation: Tariffs and rising hardware costs due to AI data centers have made it less profitable to sell at current price,” wrote one fan on Reddit. “What the fuck is going on? Did someone mess around with the timeline? I thought the older these consoles get, the cheaper they become… not the other way around,” added another. “Consoles should never cost more than their launch price. Ever,” wrote a third.
It had been thought that the PlayStation 6 would launch at some point in 2027 but earlier this year, a new report claimed the next generation console could be pushed back to 2029 due to the rising costs of memory chips.
Meanwhile, new Xbox boss Asha Sharma has said she wants to make Xbox Game Pass more affordable following last year’s massive price hike.
In other news, the ‘Undertale: The Determination Symphony’ world tour has added more dates after a string of shows sold out.
