Gerard & Leo McFadden – “Don’t Look Back”

Australian brothers Gerard & Leo McFadden captivate with both string-laden darkness and moody rock intrigue across their debut album, Light Shade Light — opened by the standout track “Don’t Look Back.” Now based in Paris, the siblings blend the driving energy of Brit-rock with the stripped-back intimacy of folk, utilizing a high-fidelity sound mastered by renowned engineer Bob Katz.

Grimy, blaring guitars and steady percussion assemble for an invigorating, darkly atmospheric rock introduction as “Don’t Look Back” begins to unfold. Moody piano lingers in the background as a chilly vocal presence. “Don’t look back, in fear, or doubt,” the vocals let out, as a ghostly combo of piano and drums interplays within these encouragements to keep trekking in the midst of tumult. Droning guitars re-emerge alongside heartrending, cinematic strings in the subsequent section, also bolstered by an additional, spine-tingling vocal layer. Perspectives on a lingering past and morose future move artfully within the impactful production.

“What good are dreams that can never come true?” the vocals open into a heightened moment, where the coexisting vocal layers, grimy guitar twangs, solemn piano, and heart-tugging strings continue to delight. “Don’t Look Back” pairs wonderfully introspective lyricism, relevant for all stages of life when one finds themselves clinging too much to nostalgia, with a darkly effective sound — opening the superb Light Shade Light with impactful emotion and moody rock atmospherics.
