HBO and BBC‘s Industry star Myha’la has revealed that she auditioned for the roles of both Maddy and Rue in Euphoria.
Speaking to Complex, the actor shared how she went up for the roles, which were ultimately played by Alexa Demi and Zendaya, respectively.
“Yeah, I did, I did… My life wouldn’t be my life today if I was in ‘Euphoria’,” she said. “And I also don’t think ‘Euphoria’ would be what it is today if I was in it.”
Myha’la ended up being cast as the ruthless Harper Stern in the slow-burning hit Industry.
“The reason ‘Industry’ is what it is, the reason ‘Euphoria’ is what it is, the reason ‘Atlanta’ was what it was, was because everyone who was meant to be in that room was in that room at that time. Lightning strikes once.”
Myha’la spoke to NME in 2023, and told us about her motivation for taking on the role of Harper. “I like [a character] to have something to fight against, or fight for,” she explained. “Justice is really important to me. Sticking up for the little guy… Any character I play, you could probably go through and ask, ‘What do they feel is an injustice? What is the thing they’re fighting against?”
Season four of Industry premiered on January 11 with one new episode of the show arriving each week before it wrapped up on March 1. It made NME’s list of shows to look forward to in 2026, describing the show’s weekly rollout as “a sure sign that Industry’s stock is still rising.”
Season four received rave reviews from critics. It received a five-star review from The Guardian, who noted that after the show “hit its stride” in its third season, “season four is even better, truly top-tier television that’s surely destined for end-of-year lists, a serious feat when we’re barely a week into January.” Other critics described it as “jaw-dropping” and “ambitious”.
Shortly before the fourth season ended, Down and Kay announced on social media that the show had been officially recommissioned for a fifth run of episodes.
Elsewhere, creators of the show recently revealed that they wanted to cast Jennifer Jason Leigh as Harper Stern’s mother before ultimately cutting her from the script.
As for Euphoria, the latest trailer for season three has fans taken aback by its new direction, which sees the character in various kinds of legal trouble.
At the end of last year, HBO shared the first look at the main cast, who will have time-jumped in season three. They’ll now appear as young adults, five years on from where the show left off.
