Iceage Announce Sixth Studio Album For Love of Grace & the Hereafter, Share New Single “Ember”

Danish post-punk visionaries Iceage have officially announced their sixth studio album, For Love of Grace & the Hereafter, set for release on May 29th via Mexican Summer. To mark the announcement, the quintet has unveiled the album’s opener, “Ember,” a track that serves as a “louche warmup” before barrelling into the band’s signature controlled mayhem. Accompanied by a music video directed by the band and Ira Rønnenfelt, the single introduces a record that vocalist Elias Rønnenfelt describes as a “sum total of inspirations,” leaning into a raw, instinctive energy that avoids over-curated aesthetics in favour of pure, immediate play.

The recording of the new project marks a significant full-circle moment for the band. For the first time in their 18-year history, Iceage returned to a previous recording location: Silence Studio, a modest house in rural Sweden near the Norwegian border. This is the same site where they tracked their 2014 landmark Plowing Into the Field of Love, and the choice was intentional. Seeking to capture a “raw and fast” intensity, the band, comprised of Rønnenfelt, Johan Suurballe Wieth, Dan Kjær Nielsen, Casper Morilla Fernandez, and Jakob Tvilling Pless, opted for a minimal setup with few overdubs. To heighten the sense of risk, the lyrics were written only weeks before entering the studio, ensuring the final performances remained urgent and untethered.

Produced alongside longtime collaborator Nis Bysted, For Love of Grace & the Hereafter is described as the band’s tightest and most “glossy” work to date, yet it remains anchored by their foundational interest in the “idea of collapse.” Between detuned riffs, glockenspiel leads, and chaotic choral breaks, the album explores themes of romantic and brotherly salvation. Following the momentum of their lead single “Star,” this new chapter finds Iceage finding a rare clarity within their characteristic chaos, proving that nearly two decades into their career, their collective curiosity and trust in their own instincts remain entirely undulled.
