Floating Sheep presents a vibrant, electro-acoustic nu-jazz journey on their self-titled album, blending ceremonial handpan textures with jazzy expanses. The Tel Aviv-based quartet utilizes an inventive setup to navigate complex improvisations, shifting from calm, meditative atmospheres to high-octane energy marked by passionate saxophone and vibey synths. Rooted in the art of live performance, the project explores contemporary global trends by pairing grooving infectiousness with eclectic electronic textures.
The album opens with a warming, meditative mystique. “The First Sheep” traverses across mellow handpan use and spacey synth trickling, with glistening piano joining seamlessly alongside. The ensuing “Wow” embraces a more rhythmic entrancement, maintaining the handpan-forward lushness and in turn crafting an atmosphere set for island blissfulness. Grooving bass adds well to the mix, which through its 6+ minutes enthralls in captivating complements of layered saxophones. Floating Sheep consistently excels with its dynamic tonal explorations, from serene understated charm to more rhythmically inclined vibrancy, and “Wow” is exemplary of this enjoyable range.
Another standout track, “Turkish Kawabanga” continues to showcase the role of handpan within this creative, stylish force — infused cohesively within a nu-jazz soundscape that alternates grippingly between handpan-forward dreaminess and bursts of ardent saxophone-propelled passion. Pitter-pattering rhythms also delight, as does the infusion of buzzy synth elements in the second half. “Gas Refunds” consumes as well, moving from lounge-friendly piano into dexterous rhythmic interplay and orchestral mystique. A uniquely impactful album that blends both contemplative atmospheres and nu-jazz vibrancy, Floating Sheep is a fantastic listening experience from the Tel Aviv-based act.
