Kate Nash Honours Sinéad O’Connor with Powerful Cover of ‘Famine’

Following a stirring live debut at a sold-out Roundhouse show, Kate Nash has officially released her cover of Sinéad O’Connor’s seminal track ‘Famine.’ A deeply personal project for Nash, who holds dual British and Irish nationality, the release includes a new original verse and features Nash playing the tin whistle, her very first instrument. Re-examining O’Connor’s discography following her passing in 2023, Nash was struck by the track’s fearless fusion of spoken word and hip-hop, which broke decades of silence surrounding the Great Hunger.

Nash views the cover not as an accusation, but as an invitation to interrogate national and personal histories. “If there is ever going to be healing, there has to be remembering,” Nash explains, echoing O’Connor’s mission to illuminate the “hidden” history of Ireland. In a time of rising global nationalism, Nash argues that the song’s message remains urgent, suggesting that a lack of historical understanding often stands in the way of a more compassionate society.

The single is accompanied by a striking music video co-directed by Nash and filmed by Jude Harrison. The visuals feature a collaboration with activist Tia O’Donnell, centred around a duvet embroidered with the provocative phrase “The English Don’t Know Their History,” which was displayed outside Parliament. As Nash continues to explore her own family roots, ‘Famine’ serves as a bridge between her heritage and her advocacy for empathy through education.
