Jack White has reacted to the new golden statue of Donald Trump that has been erected in Florida – touching on how it fits in with what he considers the “most frustrating part of modern American life”.
The 22-foot statue depicts the US president thrusting his fist into the air, reminiscent of the gesture he did after the assassination attempt at a 2024 rally in Pennsylvania.
It was unveiled at his golf course in Doral, Florida, at a ceremony presided over by Evangelical pastor Mark Burns – who previously described the president as divinely appointed (as per The Independent).
At the ceremony, the statue had white and blue fabric draped over it, similar to that of a Greek toga, and Burns held up his phone to the microphone to play a message from Trump.
“I want to thank Mark Burns. He’s a good pastor, he’s a good man,” the president was heard saying. “I’ve known him a long time, he’s been with me right from the beginning, maybe about two days later… I want to thank everybody there. I know it was done from love.”
Speaking to The Times at the start of the year, sculptor Alan Cottrill revealed that he agreed to make the sculpture in bronze for $300,000 (£221,800), and was the one to propose covering it in gold leaf – something he said went down like offering water “to a person dying of thirst”.
