Melding sophisticated West African polyrhythms with a deeply soulful, jazzy finesse, Four Lemmas is the stunning new full-length from New York-based artist UDEiGWE. The record masterfully translates mathematical proof frameworks into an elegant musical narrative, where each distinct movement traces a specific condition of human progression—from independence without isolation to balance sustained through motion. The project represents the work of Lawrence Udeigwe, a Nigerian-born, New York–based artist who is also a Professor of Mathematics at Manhattan University and a research affiliate in cognitive and brain sciences at MIT.
“Prologue: Four Lemmas” is a fantastic introduction to the sound of UDEiGWE, who quickly serves up the various elements that make this album immersive. Grooving, West African rhythms are abundant throughout, and echoed immediately here in their warming pulsations. Booming bass, mellow keys, and brassy adornments ensue, as does the artist’s dynamic vocal presence — shifting seamlessly between soulfully lush singing and spoken-word wisdom, emitting heady lines like “independence is not rebellion; it’s geometry.” This meditative opener then leads into “Lemma I: Orthogonality,” where lyrical perspectives of personal breakthrough combine with vibrant percussion, lovely brass/piano interplay, and second-half spoken-word introspection.
Another standout track, “Lemma II: Sparse Matrix” delights as well in its tonal shifts, progressing from “keep a signal, lose the clutter…” guidance into wordless vocal harmonizing and reflective brass airiness. “In every system, excess hides the truth,” UDEiGWE’s vocals continue to progress, infused alongside dreamy keys, brass, and rhythms for an intoxicating, atmospheric result. “Corollary III: Pose FM” excels as well, here propelled by breezy, funk-touched guitars and a continued sense of thematic purpose. “Now strike a pose,” the vocals enamor at one point, smitten in beholding beauty, like a photographer, and into a delectably jazzy guitar solo. Thematically spanning from independence to love, Four Lemmas is an artfully impactful full-length success from UDEiGWE.
