Noel Gallagher says he “couldn’t believe” England team were singing Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ at World Cup and he’s “staggered Jude Bellingham knows the lyrics”

    Noel Gallagher has said he “couldn’t believe” that the England team were singing Oasis‘ ‘Wonderwall’ at the World Cup last week.

    Fans of the national team sang along to the classic 1995 single following a 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas, Texas, on June 17. The players looked out from the pitch in awe during the emotional moment, with Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon seen mouthing the lyrics.

    Gallagher subsequently threw his support behind ‘Wonderwall’ becoming England’s 2026 World Cup anthem, saying the song “belongs to the people, and it was a magical moment between the people and the players”.

    Liam Gallagher then reacted to the news that the tune had seen a 50 per cent spike in streams on Spotify in the UK, ahead of England’s less impressive display against Ghana on Tuesday (June 23).

    “And rightly so it’s a fucking classic,” he tweeted, “and I sound BIBLICAL on it.”

    Noel has now spoken further about the ‘Wonderwall’ resurgence during an interview on talkSport, where he makes regular guest appearances.

    Speaking on the channel yesterday (Thursday June 25), the singer-songwriter explained: “Do you know what, I thought it was a great moment. I couldn’t actually believe what I was seeing. Like I said to the people from The Sun, that song belongs to the people.

    “I’m staggered that Jude Bellingham knows the lyrics, but it’s one of those songs.”

    His apparent slight dig comes after Bellingham scored a late winner against Noel’s beloved Manchester City with Real Madrid in early 2025, per BBC Sport.

    He continued, discussing England’s chances of clinching victory as World Cup champions: “If England get to the final… I mean, my two lads, they’re England fans. They’ll be there, and I was like, ‘It will be just your luck, you jammy little sods’.

    “[Manchester] City winning four [Premier Leagues] in a row and a Champions League, and you see England win a World Cup final in New York while they are singing your dad’s song. Like their life isn’t good enough already.”

    Elsewhere in the chat, Noel was asked if he receives huge royalties from ‘Wonderwall’ being played so often. “It’s an extraordinary amount of money,” he responded. When pressed on how much he’ll make from talkSport playing the single in the segment, he said: “About eight-and-a-half quid.”

    Noel told the station: “It’s being played all over the world, somewhere, right now. Apart from North Korea.” Check out the interview in full in the video above.
