London-based, Australian-born singer-songwriter MF Tomlinson has announced his new EP, Heaven Is Other People, alongside the release of its soaring, piano-led title track. The release marks Tomlinson’s first new music since his critically acclaimed 2025 album, Die To Wake Up From A Dream.
Described by Tomlinson as “a collection of lo-fi gestural pieces on human connection,” the five-track EP represents an intimate new creative chapter inspired by the birth of his first child. Recorded during spontaneous, late-night sessions at his Poplar studio in London, the record finds Tomlinson embracing a looser, more instinctive approach. He is joined once again by his regular band of collaborators (the “MFs”): Ed Grimshaw (drums), Ben Manning (bass), Gail Tasker (flute), and Kayvon Nabijou (keys/sax).
The title track and lead single, “Heaven Is Other People,” acts as a joyful pivot for the songwriter. Buoyed by bright piano, circling woodwinds, and radiant orchestral swells, the track transforms from a quiet, late-night reflection into an expansive, transcendent hymn celebrating the people who shape our lives.
Of the single’s origins, Tomlinson shares:
“Ten months ago I became a father – not long after, fragments of lyrics and chords assembled themselves into this song. This song is a crystallisation of the sun in the morning, three in the bed, three hours sleep-happiness that’s here now. It’s the sound of a little smile, a release after a long time of quietly hoping, a trajectory that brought on whole new body of work.”
The EP is deeply layered with personal touchstones, integrating voice notes from loved ones, sound collages by mixing engineer Paul Cousins, and a reading of “Michael – Minnesota Grandson”, a poem written by Tomlinson’s grandfather, David Rowbotham (recipient of the Order of Australia for services to literature). For the track “Rolling On Home,” Tomlinson tenderly adapts the poem for his own son, replacing “Michael” with “Robin.”
The new EP builds upon a remarkable, self-produced trilogy of albums, 2021’s Strange Time, 2023’s We Are Still Wild Horses, and 2025’s Die To Wake Up From A Dream, which solidified Tomlinson’s reputation as one of the most singular, poetic voices in the UK independent scene.
