Sick Of It All frontman Lou Koller dies aged 59 after two-year cancer battle

    Lou Koller, the frontman and co-founder of New York hardcore band Sick Of It All, has died at the age of 59.

    The news was confirmed by the band yesterday (July 24) in a statement shared on Instagram. Koller had been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a form of oesophageal cancer, in 2024.

    “It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller,” they wrote. “The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming.

    “This year would have marked Sick Of It All’s 40th anniversary as a band, and Lou’s camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm were always steadfast throughout the years. We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman.

    “Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.”

    The band also thanked those who had contributed to Koller’s medical fund during his illness. “You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years,” they said.

    “His battle is over now and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.”

    Koller first disclosed his diagnosis in June 2024, when Sick Of It All cancelled a run of European dates so he could undergo treatment.

    “The reason it is cancelled is because they found a tumour in my esophagus that goes into my stomach, and I’ll have to be getting treatment all summer,” he said at the time. “And of course, full support of the band, as soon as they heard it they were like, ‘Forget the tour, just get healthy’.”

    In May 2025, Koller announced that he had been declared cancer-free after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. Four months later, he confirmed that the cancer had returned, telling fans: “Unfortunately, the cancer has come back. And he brought some friends with him.”

    Koller formed Sick Of It All in Queens, New York in 1986 with his younger brother, guitarist Pete Koller, and drummer Armand Majidi. They emerged from the city’s hardcore scene, playing early shows at CBGB and releasing their self-titled debut EP through Revelation Records in 1987.

    The band’s first full-length album, ‘Blood, Sweat And No Tears’, followed in 1989. They went on to release 12 studio albums, including 1992’s ‘Just Look Around’, 1994’s ‘Scratch The Surface’ and 1997’s ‘Built To Last’, becoming one of New York hardcore’s most influential bands.

    Sick Of It All’s most recent album was 2018’s ‘Wake The Sleeping Dragon!’.
