If you’ve loved noise rock, art punk, Glassjaw, or early MCR as much as you hate the powers that be, crank Evil Island’s “King Death,” the latest single and music video from their forthcoming debut album, Terraform The Afterlife – due August 14 via Blowed Out Records. Kicking off the 13-track album, “King Death” gives us a glimpse of the elements of post-hardcore, noise rock, art punk, and intensely chaotic (and massively cathartic) experimentation of sound.
Right off the bat, Johnny Whitney’s vocals rip through a cutting-edge band and tap into a primal, thunderous memory right beneath your skin; “King Death” brings an intensity with nothing to lose, all on the table, and makes no apologies for embodying what punk rock has been, and right through the doors it continues to kick down today.
In a similar spitfire spirit as their previous singles “Tiger Baby,” “Animal,” and “Melted Heart (ft. Alexis Krauss),” the lyrics of “King Death” pull no punches and paint a landscape worthy of its title:
“If you want mе, come and get me
I’m in a gravеyard in your body
I’m wrapped ’round your teeth like a tapeworm
I piss in your heart like a vulture”
Keeping in stomping step with their thrashing sound, the music video depicts a Las Vegas cardboard landscape with signature symbols of excess and vice (directed by Chelsea Deebo and edited by Delaney Schenker). Cardboard scythe in his fist, Johnny Whitney and the band are captured through a vintage tape camera that spits in the face of a polished, expensive veneer. Clever execution, true to their sound, and shamelessly creative for the sake of what they’re making, Evil Island made cardboard and “outdated” cameras the coolest thing you’ll see all fuckin’ week long. (Shoutout to Cardboard Sessions, a collaboration between SIGNAL EXP and Ernest Packaging, showing how the disposable will not go quietly.) With a touch of rockstar flair, the video was shot in the legendary Studio One at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles, famous for the likes of Sinatra, Michael Jackson, and Adele recording some of their own work there.
Worth every second of overdriven chaos, throw “King Death” on your next playlist for driving through the Vegas desert in a getaway car or fighting some piece of the shitty system. User discretion advised.
