Lillian is set to release her album titled ‘The World to Come’ on August 28th. ‘Fourth of July’ is the third single released from this. Lillian’s first release from the upcoming album, ‘Untethered Alchemy’, was previously reviewed by me on RCM. ‘Fourth of July’ features a new approach from Lillian. She reveals an innate ability to strip it all back and sublimely simplify her sound.
The song is a reflection on the pre-breakup period before the ending inevitably comes. The track is far from a portrait of the American mind but subtly dips into the culture in a truly insightful way. The song chooses to focus on the feeling of uneasy love, especially around such an important holiday and the questions this raises.
The lyrics chosen fade in and out of the moment seamlessly. Lillian has a deft ability to entice the listener. Her voice and accompanying musical arrangements are simply magical. Fluttering vocal layering as the song builds cleverly captures the essence of human thought. The spiralling nature of thought is portrayed delightfully through goosebump-inducing sounds.
With three delightful singles already on display, ‘The World to Come’ promises to be an electric album. Each of the tracks has its own gorgeous, unique ability to capture our hearts. I anticipate this release greatly.
