Darren Flynn, out of Ireland, has an Irish folk song for the times. “Pinebox” draws heavily from traditional Irish music, with some modern flavors of folk punk. The song is a call to attention regarding what is going on politically in society, as well as a call to action. How do we resist what is occuring? War is happening, and war is brewing. The upper class and the alt-right do not care about humanity, which is displayed by the use of a pinebox as a cheap coffin for the massive number of bodies that come out of war. Darren Flynn wrote the song after noticing populist far-right movements, including nationalism, gain popularity across Europe. He wrote it a few years ago, but its meaning echoes strongly right now.
“I wrote the song a few years ago when I started to notice all of these populist far-right movements begin to spring up throughout Europe, all of them championing nationalist and jingoistic ideals. Two things struck me – that the last time such a thing happened, the ultimate result was war between neighbouring countries, and that those who were supporting the demagogues were the ones who would ultimately pay with their lives, not the demagogues themselves.”
The track features mostly acoustic guitar and vocals, but also has organ, banjo and hand percussion. The track sounds organic from start to finish, having a live feel to it, which brings a level of intamacy and urgency from the track to the listeners ears. Listen to this track now:
