Pearly Gates is the electronic solo project of Newcastle-based Tom Hunt. His music can be described as ambient electronic soundscapes, gradually spreading atmospheric textures across the dancefloor. So far, the project has received support from BBC Introducing and BBC Radio 6 Music for his track Hadley.
Aiming to build further momentum, Pearly Gates has unveiled META, a single with plenty of meaning behind it. Exploring the relationship between modern media, self-awareness, and loneliness, the track takes an ironic look at how the internet has changed the way we understand ourselves and the world around us.
Speaking about the inspiration behind META, Pearly Gates said:
“Everyone is constantly overanalysing themselves, consuming endless advice, endless discourse, endless content, endless influence; everyone knows why they’re unhappy now, but that awareness never translates into actually feeling better or more connected with others. The song feels like cracking a joke at the exact moment you’re falling apart. The verses are somewhat observational, detached, and overstimulated, but the bridge accidentally tells you the truth. The song’s really about loneliness disguised as media literacy, which is quite funny, and bleak.”– Tom Hunt.
But here is the truly beautiful part of this composition: even with such a relevant theme behind it, this track shines on its own from a purely musical perspective. This is not to diminish the solid songwriting present here, because it is truly remarkable, but the song could be about mashed potatoes and still sound amazing thanks to its intricate and mesmerizing production.
As soon as the song begins, the expertise of Pearly Gates becomes evident. The senses are flooded by a comforting array of sounds, followed almost immediately by Tom Hunt’s gentle vocals, which move back and forth through a layered barrage of synthetic vocal effects and backing squeaks. In the end, if there is proof that electronic music can transmit emotion despite its supposed artificial nature, it can be found in tracks like this one.
Masterfully composed and clearly the result of plenty of thought, both musically and thematically, META is a total gem and a great example of modern electronic music done the right way!
