‘The Witcher 4’ gets 2028 release date

    The Witcher 4 is set to launch at some point in 2028, according to game developers CD Projekt Red.

    The Witcher 4 was officially confirmed at the end of 2024 with an ambitious cinematic trailer after the game was first teased back in 2022. The six-minute video revealed a grown-up Ciri would be the protagonist for The Witcher 4 with the game “marking the beginning of a new saga” following the events of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

    In a new update, game developers CD Projekt Red has now confirmed that they’re looking to release The Witcher 4 at some point in 2028.

    “This is our biggest, boldest and most ambitious game to date,” added joint CEO Michal Nowakowski. “I know it’s a bit of a wait and you’d love to play it sooner but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait.” More than 500 developers are currently working on The Witcher 4, which will feature “a huge and immersive open world, intense and action packed gameplay and a deep, impactful story” that the team hope will “stay with you for a long time”.

    If you’re worried about the wait, a new expansion for The Witcher 3 is set to launch at some point next year. Fans will be able to get their first proper look at the Songs Of The Past DLC this weekend at Gamescom.

    The Witcher 4 will be the start of a new trilogy of games, and the wait between them reportedly won’t be as long. “Our plan still is to launch the whole trilogy within a six-year period, so yes, that would mean we would plan to have a shorter development time between The Witcher 4 and 5, between 5 and 6, and so on,” said Nowakowski last year.

    In other news, Ori And The Will Of The Wisps creator Thomas Mahler has shut down “nonsense” rumours that a third game is in the works.
