Rupert Grint is set to reprise his role as Ron Weasley in the Broadway production of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.
The actor played Ron in all eight of the original Harry Potter films between 2001 and 2011, and will now take on the grown-up version of the character for a 17-week run at New York’s Lyric Theatre.
Grint will begin performances on February 2, 2027 and continue until May 30.
He follows Tom Felton, who returned to his role as Draco Malfoy in the Broadway show last November and was met with a huge ovation on his opening night. The pair will not share the stage, however, with Felton due to play his final performance on January 3, a month before Grint joins the cast.
“Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life,” Grint said in a statement. “There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new.”
He added: “The first time I saw Cursed Child onstage, I was blown away and I can’t wait to set foot back on Platform 9 ¾ and pick up where I left off. I am overjoyed to join this exceptional cast and crew at the Lyric Theatre this winter.”
Harry Potter And The Cursed Child is set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows and sees Harry, Ron, Hermione and Draco as adults, with the story largely revolving around their children and a new generation of Hogwarts students.
The play first opened in London’s West End in 2016, and went on to win nine Olivier Awards. The Broadway production opened in 2018 and won six Tony Awards, including Best Play.
Grint previously made his Broadway debut in 2014 in Terrence McNally’s It’s Only A Play, alongside Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane. He had made his West End debut a year earlier in Jez Butterworth’s Mojo, which also starred Ben Whishaw.
His return to Ron comes after Grint revealed last year that he had contacted Alastair Stout, the young actor who is taking over the role in HBO‘s forthcoming Harry Potter television adaptation.
“I’ll never never step out of Ron Weasley’s shadow,” Grint said at the time. “But that’s fine, I’ve made peace with it.”
Grint has also previously spoken out against J.K. Rowling‘s controversial views on gender and the trans community. Speaking at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, he reiterated his support for the trans community.
Elsewhere, the new HBO adaptation of the books is set to premiere on HBO Max on Christmas Day. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, Arabella Stanton will star as Hermione and Stout will take on Ron.
A number of the actors involved in the show have chosen to distance themselves from Rowling’s controversial views, including Bel Powley, John Lithgow, Nick Frost and Paapa Essiedu.
The second season is already due to begin filming this autumn, with Kit Harington recently replacing Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart after the latter exited due to scheduling conflicts.
