Gal Gadot has criticised DC Studios for cancelling the third Wonder Woman movie, as well as the firing of Henry Cavill from the role of Superman.
The star was cast in the title role of 2017’s Wonder Woman, the first female-led movie in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which led to the 2020 sequel Wonder Woman 1984. She would also make cameos in the second Shazam film, and appeared in 2023’s The Flash, which was her last appearance in the role.
The DCEU was wound down in 2023, replaced by a new continuity titled the DC Universe, with James Gunn at the head of the newly-formed DC Studios. The new timeline, which began on the big screen with last year’s Superman, meant the previous DCEU stars were no longer part of their plans.
In December 2022, Henry Cavill announced he would not be reprising the role of Superman, despite being assured he would be returning after making a cameo in the movie Black Adam. Gunn later denied “firing” him, insisting he simply “was never cast” for the rebooted version of the character.
Gadot never officially announced her departure, although reports emerged that she would not be returning, and Gunn revealed last year that a new Wonder Woman movie was being written.
Reflecting on the period, Gal Gadot spoke to Happy Sad Confused podcast and expressed disappointment about how the previous creatives were treated.
When asked if there was a moment when she was told she would no longer be playing Wonder Woman, she replied: “No, they told me the opposite. They were like, ‘We’re going to develop it with you, the third one.’ But I saw the way everybody else was handled, right? And I, you know — the Henry situation was unfortunate. I was in the middle of that. The Henry situation was not handled elegantly, to say the least.”
Despite the disappointment, Gadot remains philosophical about the situation. “I feel like we’re all adults and it’s all good,” she said. “It’s not even about them. They are there and they’re there to do what they believe in, and it’s all good.”
Cavill would be succeeded by David Corenswet in 2025’s Superman, which was set in a new universe and was a box office hit for DC Studios. A follow-up, Supergirl, was not as successful, making less money than notorious Marvel flop Morbius. Corenswet will return to the role in Man Of Tomorrow, scheduled for release next year.
