On September 12 Girl's Hood, released "LET THEM" — the second single from the collaborative project between Jiselle and SUMMER CAKE.
Through their pre-release track "Circle in Me," Jiselle and SUMMER CAKE delivered the initial message of 'Girl's Hood': that one can find empathy and solidarity despite differing emotions and attitudes.
While the beginning served to introduce the project through the artists' approachable and mainstream appeal, the second single, "LET THEM," takes a step further to reveal the project's more distinct stance.
"LET THEM" literally means letting others speak, think, and judge as they please. There are moments when we feel compelled to constantly explain and prove ourselves amidst the gaze and judgment of others, or when we doubt and compare ourselves against standards set by someone else. "LET THEM" stems from the attitude of focusing on one's own life and choices—leaving others' opinions to them—rather than reacting to every single thing they say or do.
For Jiselle and SUMMER CAKE, who have sustained long careers while staying true to their own artistic identities as female artists, this message is far more than just a slogan. Exposed to countless eyes and standards dictating what to wear, how to act, and what music to create, both artists have cultivated their own originality in their respective ways. Thus, "Let Them" is not merely advice offered to others; it reflects the artists' own composed and honest perspective on themselves.
The music itself vividly embodies this attitude. Set against a minimal yet powerful and groovy Afrobeats rhythm, Jiselle and SUMMER CAKE’s distinct vocal tones freely intertwine; rather than straining to prove themselves, they lead the track with an air of relaxed confidence and ease. While "Circle in Me" finds common ground in emotions that everyone has likely experienced at some point, "LET THEM" offers an answer regarding the attitude with which we should live beyond those feelings.
