At sundown, even a familiar landscape can begin to feel strange, its ordinary landmarks suggesting places you might once have visited in a dream. On Western, The Church gives that feeling an easy, unhurried shape. A shuffling drumbeat keeps moving with quiet resolve while gentle guitar chimes and a bed of breezy synths suggest the tall shadows cast by the last light spreading across the desert. Beneath them, the bass holds a deep, rounded groove, giving Steve Kilbey room to sing with the calm of someone who has already heard every objection.
Recorded in Austin, Texas, Western offers another look at Lacuna, the Australian band’s 28th album, due October 30, 2026 via Cooking Vinyl. The 17-track record follows their recent singles-celebrating world tour, with this latest release picking up after Sacred Echoes Part II.
Kilbey’s matter-of-fact yet nostalgic delivery gives the song its peculiar comfort. You could picture him singing from the corner of a dim saloon, entertaining a few gamblers with a story whose details become stranger with each telling. His voice carries a trace of resignation and a dry amusement, taking each improbable turn in stride. Around him, the guitars leave space for the rhythm to breathe, their wistful and twangy post-punk melodies carrying a dusky bittersweetness that seems perfectly at ease with itself.
The lyrics seem to wander from men rolling dice to strange encounters, glimpses of another world, and eventually outer space. Those abrupt changes of scene suit the music’s steady momentum, with Kilbey following each detour as casually as he might describe the route home. Across three minutes, Western makes a rambling, faintly dangerous adventure feel as easy as watching the sun go down.
“Well, we were in Texas, weren’t we?” laughs Kilbey. “As a kid, all there was on TV were Westerns, so I let it all soak in and this is what came out. Some nice six-string bass counter riffs going, and the song is basically a shaggy dog story that just jumps all over the place… breezy and uncomplicated.”

Formed in 1980, The Church have spent 46 years exploring the meeting points of post-punk, psychedelia, and dream pop, with songs including The Unguarded Moment, Almost With You, Under the Milky Way, and Reptile marking different stages of that history. Their current six-piece lineup brings Kilbey together with longtime drummer and producer Tim Powles, guitarists Ian Haug and Ashley Naylor, multi-instrumentalist Jeffrey Cain, and newest member, drummer Nicholas Meredith.
