Ira Ellison’s song “Call Sign” will creep under your skin from the very first notes. The idea behind this new round of releases is to get away from my past tendencies of over-cooking or over-effecting everything, especially my vocals, overusing effects and wacky sounds etc. Im trying to simplify. Im less interested in ‘woah what effect is that there???’ And more interested in how the simplest version of something can make you feel.  I’m trying to really be honest and exposed, maybe as an exercise in embracing what I see as my own shortcomings

‘Call sign‘ has my vocals more forward and in your face than anything ive released before, and i find it to be really hard to not turn that fader down when mixing. As I’ve made music over time, I’ve started to become more cognizant of ‘am I turning my vocals down because it fits the song, or because I’m scared?’ Usually, it’s because I’m scared. So now I turn them up.

I used to lean towards slapping a super wet reverb or delay on a track to make it sound crazy as a way to make the song what I used to think was more interesting. Lately what I think is most interesting and resonant is the human element, so I want to make that as visible and audible as I can, for better or for worse. Ive had a tendency before to lean on over effected production, but now i want to keep everything pretty dry, simple, and clean. In the past if my vocals sounded a little off or the guitars didn’t sound huge, I would just start adding things, but this time im just like no, all of the vocals and instruments are basically dry I wanted to pretty much produce and track the song like i couldn’t mix it – Ira Ellison
