New Hope, Pennsylvania indie-folk singer-songwriter Sean Hopkins explores resilience, healing, and the gradual recovery of hope throughout Shadows & Light, his newly released album. Following 2022’s Chasing Ghosts in the Dark and 2024’s Pictures of Nothing, the release continues his intimate approach to songwriting and personal storytelling.

The album’s title track commences the release with riveting folk qualities, as the delivery asks “where do we go from here?” with introspective appeal as twangy guitars add well to the jangling strums. “Please come to rescue me,” a soaring melodic plea follows, striving to “release the ghost in my mind” in depicting a drive to become unencumbered by past baggage. The shifts between the heartfelt verses and melodic chorus are seamlessly accomplished. Both more dynamic tracks like “Shadows & Light” stir alongside more sparse folk accomplishments in the vein of “November’s Here Again,” whose gentle acoustic trickles swell into a synth and piano-touched catharsis, in declaring “I’m getting older, but I’m not alone.”

“Slowly Drifting” is another delight, caressing in its soft strums and sporadic plucks, while lyrical mystique — “the doorway leads to a darkened room…” — builds into a light percussive pit-patter, crafting a serenely impactful sound as the “someday soon you’ll leave my mind” line continues themes of letting go. “Eden’s Garden” stirs as well, featuring fantastic interplay between lush piano and heartrending acoustics. Shadows & Light presents an emotively memorable folk captivation from Sean Hopkins.
