Refinement_2026 is a memorable new album from Cleveland-area project POKE A BRAIN, reflecting more than 25 years of composition and performance through a wide-ranging blend of grunge, classic rock, blues, jazz, soul, and metal. Led by a composer and multi-instrumentalist, the project embraces an intentionally fluid approach to genre.

“WILD WEST” quickly unveils the artist’s knack for playfully invigorating creativity, here infusing grungy guitar riffs alongside whirring synths as fervent lines emerge. “They say I’m a cowboy, baby, ’cause I like to ride,” the delivery shines within a lovely balance of guitars and synths, venturing with infectious stylishness to a rousing guitar solo past the two-minute turn. The ensuing “WITH STRINGS ATTACHED” excels with a moodier intrigue, shifting the lead performance to a dreamier, soulful realm. “Nobody knows how to forgive,” they let out alongside stylish guitars, then swelling to a riveting, raucous rock demeanor in the final minute.

Another highlight, “PEARL,” brings us back into the classic-rock realm. Pulsing rhythms and bursting guitar charisma waste no time establishing a contagious energy. An ominous lead presence, with shades of Black Sabbath, envelops through an initially grimy rock allure, while heightened melodic clarity shows past the midpoint alongside a layered interaction between twangy guitars and frolicking strums. Elsewhere, “MIDLIFE” channels a more spirited rock familiarity, dazzling especially in the uptick in distortion and raw passion in the outro, beckoning not to compromise.
