Lady Nade – ‘Identity’

Bristol-based singer-songwriter Lady Nade captivates with a soulful, genre-fluid approach on Identity, her fourth studio album, moving between folk, Americana, jazz, blues, soul, and soft rock. Produced by Archie Sylvester and Michael Rendall, the deeply personal collection centers on self-discovery and self-acceptance while reflecting Nade’s increasingly open songwriting.

The album’s title track is riveting in its poetic self-power lyricism and grooving instrumentation. “Singing it for the first time in my life, identity, identity, I’m all the things I’m meant to be,” Lady Nade’s delivery stirs, opening the album with an enveloping proclamation about cherishing one’s identity and potential. Bluesy guitar tones add further to the soundscape across the second half, melding with stylish organs. Following previously featured gem “One Of Us,” “Rainbow” showcases a more folk-ready immersion. “I need chaos, I need calm,” her lead resonates here, vulnerable in capturing the wide range of human emotions and the beckoning for love. Gorgeous strings bolster the magnetic production throughout.

Elsewhere, “Sober” rides on a twangy rock suaveness, asking “can we be friends now that I’m sober?” with throwback pop harmonizing. The yearning for another chance, following personal recovery, is impactful lyrically, as are the timeless-sounding backing harmonies. “Masks” is another gem in the heartrending realm, delighting with woozy, jazzy rhythms and haunting vocal backings. Dazzling throughout an array of soulful pop and subdued, ghostly introspections alike, Identity is a fantastic full-length from Lady Nade.
