Abby Posner has recently released another song to add to her discography of unique folk/Americana flair. With evident skills playing any stringed instrument, she dusts the track’s heart-wrenching lines with flourishes of guitar and banjo riffs fit to voice the struggles of dating over forty in “Die Alone.”
A happy camper who’s survived some rough times in the wild world, there’s a fireside wisdom to the sentiments she stomps and strums along with. Abby’s “Die Alone” floats comfortably in a deep eddy reflecting the shines of Brandi Carlile, Ryan Cassata, Brian Fallon, and Tyler Childers.
She puts passion and soul into everything she plays, including her other works; she’s the lead singer of Americana band Abby and The Myth. In 2020, Abby Posner won the Carl Gage “Give me Shelter in Place” Songwriting Award through the Topanga Folk Festival for her original song, “Blind Spots.”
Posner is best known for twisting genres and pushing the boundaries of folk and roots music, and “Die Alone” is a testament to her ability to highlight an organic warmth in her style of folk while singing on the cold, hard truths of dating through the lens of how it impacts the way we exist.
It wouldn’t be a good folk song without lighting a lantern in a shadowy place, so to speak. Abby’s lyrics are as existential as they are urgently relevant while navigating partnership and the years left in life. The chorus is perhaps the most striking:
The truth is hard, but it’s better than the dark
I met home once, eshe left some kind of mark
I wanna lose myself and all I know
The doctor said, ‘At this rate, you’re bound to die alone.’
Posner’s introspection reaches folks on all points on the map of life on “Die Alone,” and well beyond the song itself. Abby’s elaboration on the song strikes just as true as her chords, her lyricism, and her musical talent.
“I think most of us, regardless of our age, are afraid of being alone. We want to find someone who really sees us, but the older we get, the more complicated that search can feel. So ‘Die Alone’ is really about that contradiction: the absurdity of modern dating and the very real loneliness underneath it. I wanted the song to be funny and self-aware, but also honest about how exhausting it can be to keep putting yourself out there and hoping that, somehow, you’ll find something genuine.” – Abby Posner
